Autumn colours reflected in the bright orange of pumpkins and the burnished shells of chestnuts; traces of winter on an empty beach sown with rose coloured shells and bleached driftwood on the shoreline; a breath of spring in the delicate bower of wisteria; shelter from the hot summer sun beneath a pergola laden with flowers in a luxuriant, well ordered garden: all of this is in the painting of Sara Wilson. Without apparent conflict, the work achieves a complex interaction between light, time, season and sensation. A fluid compromise exists between still life and landscape, carrying an instinctive musical impression which resembles the temperament of the artist, who alternates the understated melancholy of gentle English nostalgia with the clear luminous effect of Mediterranean sunlight. The artist's talent combines a spontaneous alchemy of perception and imagination with an unsophisticated technique to produce work which attracts by the genius of its simplicity. A plait of garlic, a copper pan, a wicker basket, arrangements of flowers forming a harmonious symphony of emotions - by her investigation and introspective research, the artist has created a metamorphosis which we see translated into a manifestation of art and poetry. |
